Motherwort is native to Central Asia and southeastern Europe. The ancient Greeks called motherwort, "lion's heart", and used it for emotional and physical problems of the heart. In China, it was used for longevity, and Native American traditions used it for women's health issues, digestion, and relaxation. For women's reproductive health motherwort is tonifing to the uterus and balancing to women's hormonal changes including pms, menopause, and regulates menstruation.

As a powerful heart and cardiovascular tonic, motherwort can be helpful where stress is directly affecting the heart. It has a calming action on the smooth muscles of the heart, and is a mild vasodilator helping to slow the heart beat or palpitations. Additonally, motherwort acts on the digestive tract and liver, helps support the nervous system, is anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic.
