A simple but effective herbal tonic for supporting a healthy sleep cycle. Many factors contribute to sleep disorders. This formula seeks to address the need to calm both the body and mind by decreasing tension and promoting relaxation using sedative and soothing nervines in addition to emotionally grounding herbs.
~Valerian is native to Europe and Western Asia. It has a long history in Indian Ayurvedic medicine and in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a tonic. In Victorian times it was used frequently for anxiety, insomnia, and headaches. Valerian is classified as a nervine sedative by relaxing the central nervous system. It is helpful for chronic insomnia, such as difficulty falling asleep or constant waking. Valerian also has antispasmodic benefits in both muscular and digestive complaints. It may also help promote better digestion, and lower blood pressure.
~Hops are native to Europe and western Asia, and used in folk traditions for relaxation, indigestion, and inflammation. Hops are a sedative nervine and act as a relaxant, sleep aid, and to relieve muscle and nerve pain. For women's health, hops are pyto-estrogenic and help support hormonal imbalances such as menopausal and pms symptoms. Hops bitter actions are also useful for the gastrointestinal tract helping with digestion of fats, nervous distress affecting digestion, and are also known to possess antiparasitic, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.
~Lemon Verbena is native to South America and in traditional folk medicine used for nervous system health and the ability to induce calm and promote better sleep. In Mexican folk traditions it was employed for emotional distress or sadness as it lifts the spirits. Lemon verbena aids digestion by reducing bloating, stomach cramps, heartburn, dispells intestinal worms, is antifungal and antibacterial, and when there is emotional distress that affects the digestive tract. It also aids in fat assimilation and is supportive of the liver, and has an affinity for the lungs which helps to clear sinus congestion. Additionally, it has strong anti-inflammatory properties helping with pain, joint issues, and as a muscle relaxant and for muscle recovery after exertion.
~Hawthorn is native to Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America, and is deeply respected and revered in many folk traditions throughout the world both medicinally and spirituality. In Chinese Traditional Medicine hawthorn was used to calm the spirit of the heart, and have an impact on emotional balance. As a calming nervine, hawthorn helps to relax tension and ease the mind. Additonally, hawthorn is reputed medicinally as one of the best heart, circulatory and cardiovascular tonics.
